Maria Selvey is a psychologist that has worked extensively with clients who have experienced complex trauma as a child and as an adult.
Maria has maintained a clinical goal to heal rather than manage trauma symptoms. She has had clients that have experienced extensive adhoc therapy or Buddhist training, clients that can talk their trauma back to front and upside down, yet continue to have trauma symptoms and relationship issues. She has realised that her focus is to diminish symptoms permanently, which means thinking on a neurobiological level.
Through intense skill development over 15 years Maria's practice has seen long-term change in many clients, and she is now wanting to be a part of supporting the development of other clinicians to achieve similar goals in this specialised area.
Maria's therapy of choice factors in trauma-informed (knowing how the brain is affected by complex and repetitive trauma), primarily bottom's up (aiming at the primitive central nervous system), and attachment approaches. Her therapy uses practices such as traditional mindfulness and attention-training with substantial psychoeducation to work on symptoms that are driving current thoughts and actions.
Maria is watching and waiting for change as opposed to teaching change. This is where neuronal growth occurs, and the wonders of personality, self trust, and ability to act on values and beliefs rather than instant fight/flight response emerge.
